While in Fresno I accompanied my wife to her "functions". Always as "Mr Liz". I was her well mannered, polite, and not too ugly date so to speak.
So one summer night we went to an incredibly beautiful old home near Downtown (not Fig Garden.. almost right down town in the old-money part). So like most socials in the Fresno summer the gathering was outdoors where I was doing my polite socializing. After awhile I got some wine and went out to the edge of the large patio and sipped. I had nothing to do since I had already done my Mr Liz job (she is on the clock so she is non-stop socializing). So I was standing when a very well dressed black man walked up to me to chat. He didn't introduce himself but he didn't ask who I was either and I thought telling him I was "Mr Liz" would just confuse him anyway. He was on the short side, dapper, and spoke with a deep controlled baritone, and seemed extremely self-controlled. I forgot what we chatted about. Nothing political I'm sure. I believe we talked about the Fresno State Bull Dogs and maybe some other common news event but then after two miutes someone else came up to him and took his attention. No big thing.. the wine was yummy so went back for more..
After Liz and I got home I described my meeting with "this guy" and asked who he was. She explained to me, "That was Willie Brown, it was 'his' fund raiser"!
Oh... duh :(
