We were back in DC with the National Association of Realtors convention and had a table at the Reagan dinner... at the Hilton. However much per plate it cost I don't know but we didn't pay for it. Liz was the Executive Officer of the Fresno Board of Realtors then and I was just me... sometimes called, "Mr Liz" hahahahaha.
It was at the DC Hilton and we were sitting at one of the 50 tables with ten per table... all of us from the San Joaquin Valley.
I assumed that President Reagan was down front eating at one of the blue chip tables.
But that was not the case.
About 3/4 through our dinner all of the doors closed. Someone said through the speakers that we could not leave. Shrug.. I didn't have to go pee so no big thing. Anyway as we looked up the isles towards the doors and we could see two well dressed Secret Service dudes at each door. And YES they had on sunglasses and a thingy plugged into their ear. LOL!
Then after awhile the POTUS walked in from a side entrance and gave a speech. I have forgotten about what but that doesn't matter. There was lots of applause and I clapped on cue like a good Mr Liz. I guess it didn't dawn on me until years later that it was a privilege to be there.
If I don't recall all of this correctly Liz will fix.
Anyway I am pretty sure that The President had not yet been shot outside that hotel as I can remember walking around it during the day (probably having a smoke) and the south entrance was just a normal south entrance. Today they have a big canvas tent over it and that was put there after the shooting.
So historically speaking I was standing right where the cameraman was when he came out to get in the limo and Hinkley shot him... sometime after we were there of course.
Just some Me Liz history
correction
Nope.. this was after he was shot. I guess they only put the tent up on days he was going in or out of the Hilton...since we were there with the Fresno group it had to be well into ronnie's second term. He was shot in March '81 and we were not in Fresno then.thus is my memory LOL
